Installation Issues

Problem: The Express Installer is not downloading any software.

Solution: First, check to make sure you have an active Internet connection while you are running the Express Setup program. An active connection is required so that the Setup program can download additional software. If you connect to the Internet with a modem, run your Internet dialer program to connect to the Internet. Then try running the Express Setup program again.

Second, check to see if you need to specify a proxy server name and port. If you connect to the Internet through a local area network (LAN), your network may be using a proxy server to protect your internal network from unauthorized access by outsiders. Often called a "gateway" or a "firewall," the proxy server acts as a security barrier between computers and the Internet.

If your LAN is using a proxy server, then the Express Setup program needs to know the proxy server address and port number so that it can download the Express software. When you find out this information, run the Express Setup program again, and enter the server name and port when prompted to do so. Then the installation should work properly.

Problem: Express is installed on a Windows NT system that is being shared by more than one user. However some users cannot open Express.

Solution: On Windows NT, every Express user must be a member of the same group as the original user who installed Express. For example if a Windows NT Administrator installed Express, then Windows NT Users may not be able to open Express. To correct the problem, log on to Windows NT at the minimum group level you want (such as User). Then reinstall Express. (#1751)

Sharing Express With Others on a Single Computer

If you share a computer with other people, you can all share one copy of Express, and it will keep track of each user's unique settings, such as customized categories and saved searches.

Each user who wants to use Express should register as a new user, and then log on to Express with that user name.

Registering as a New User

To register as a new user, do the following:

  1. Start Express.
  2. Click the Switch User button below the "About this Category" area.
You see the user login page.
  3. Choose New User from the list and click Let Me In.
  4. Read the license agreement and click Accept.
  5. Complete the New User Registration form, and then click Register.
Express opens and logs in under your login name.

Starting Express on a Shared Computer

When multiple people share Express on a single computer, it's important that each user switches to his or her login name when starting Express.

To switch to your login name when starting Express, do the following:

  1. Start Express.
  2. Look below the "About this Category" area at the current user information. If you are not the current user, click the Switch User button.
You see the user login page.
  3. Choose your login name from the list and click Let Me In.

Problems Using Express (all Web browsers)

For detailed information on how to check if you are using a proxy server and perhaps make Express run faster, see the see the support page on the Express Web site, and look for the document called, "My office has a pretty fast network, but Express still runs slow. Is there a way to make it faster?"

Error: unable to connect to the host server

The quick fix to this problem is to select a different weather source in the Weather category.

The longer fix is to update the Java Virtual Machine that Express uses, which will enable you to use the Weather Channel source. For more information on updating your Java Virtual Machine, see the support page on the Express Web site, and look for the document called, "How do I Update the Java Virtual Machine that Express Uses?"

Problems Using Express (Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browsers)

If the Preferences dialog box is behind another Express window or minimized, clicking an Express Prefs, Info, or Edit button will not bring the Preferences dialog box to the front. To see the Preferences dialog box, click its taskbar button. (#1177)
